There are a lot of similarities between hiking and working on a software product. We have enjoyed both for the last 21 years in Sofia. The biggest lesson we learned is that you need a team to share the success on top and more so to endure the challenges and storms on the way.
Every team member has their role and is crucial for a safe, successful and enjoyable experience.

The planner. Making sure we find the best trail ahead. It is a hard job since it must be safe, so no one gets lost or left behind. It also needs to stay challenging, so we can take a step forward and not lose the opportunity to reach the highest peak in sight. Flexibility is another aspect of this demanding task as we need to be ready to change course if needed and communicate quickly and efficiently with the whole group.
The cautious one. The environment is always changing and if we are not ready for the basic threats, we will not have the energy to walk further than before. Having someone who saw the coming danger ahead of time can save us from harm or at least from losing a lot of precious time.
The senior. There are the experienced guides, who have been climbing peaks for years and have accumulated a lot of knowledge. They can lead by showing the others the best way to reach the top.

The junior. The enthusiastic new editions to the group have the particularly important quality of seeing the road with a fresh pair of eyes. Maybe the path has changed, or a new possibility has appeared and being able to see it is valuable for the team.
The positive one. We should never forget about the one who is not the first to reach the peak but always has a beer or a sweet to celebrate success. After a tiring journey, the moral of the group is often low. It is not the most exciting thing to go down and back to the starting point. Having this spirit of keeping a positive attitude and not forgetting about the win we just had is what can bring us to the point of looking up to the next top charged with excitement.
There is always a new peak to conquer and a new challenge to tackle. What keeps us going is to never look back but keep our sight fixed on the next goal. Having the team ready and excited is the only thing that cannot be left aside. So, our backpacks and batteries are full, the supplies are prepared, the map is loaded and up we go!
